New Year's Eve 1995
Back before I was married with children, my friends and I used to go into Boston for the First Night activities. Those nights were usually fun, but relatively uneventful. Except for 1995. First Night activities are pretty well distributed across the city. As the midnight hour draws nearer, though, most people head towards Government Center, Faneuil Hall, and Long Wharf in order to get a good spot...

Sleepy Head
Last night, one of the times that I woke up in the middle of the night, that one time other than the two that were caused by the baby crying and wanting to eat, I woke up because my head was asleep. I woke up on my back with my head thrust forward sharply by my pillow so that my chin was on my chest, and my head was completely numb. I moved around and then I started to get that pins and needles...

Lake Champlain Bridge →
I posted previously that the Lake Champlain Bridge was scheduled to be demolished last week. The demolition was delayed due to weather, but has been rescheduled for this morning at 10am EST. A live broadcast of the demolition will be available via links at https://www.nysdot.gov/lakechamplainbridge or www.nysdot.gov/webcast. I believe the links will be activated at 9:45.

Why NORAD Tracks Santa →
Interesting back story as to why NORAD started tracking Santa: The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations “hotline.” The Director of Operations at the time,...

Transition
Part 4 of a series After adopting Betsy, my parents became friends with the trainer we had adopted her from. My parents ended up buying a young greyhound from him as an investment. When that dog was ready to start racing at the track, the State Racing Commission informed the track that I could no longer work as a leadout because there was a conflict of interest. Track management was very...

If you're poor, be prepared to prove it. →
From the Seattle Times: Rachel Porcaro knows she’s hardly rich. When you’re a single mom making 10 bucks an hour, you don’t need government experts to tell you how broke you are. But that’s what happened. The government not only told Porcaro she was poor. They said she was too poor to make it in Seattle. <snip> But the agency insisted Rachel couldn’t prove...

Here's a Dumb-Ass Web Site →
At StandForChristmas.com, consumers can rate retailers on their “Christmas-Friendliness”. You might be asking yourself what that means. It means how well they incorporate the actual word “Christmas” instead of Satan-inspired phrases such as “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings” in their advertisements, promotions, signs, messages, greetings, etc. ...

Gratuitous Paragraph About Yourself Wednesday
My normally-25-minute commute took about 70 minutes this morning because it’s the first weekday snow of the season and people always forget over the summer how to drive in the snow even if the first snow is only about an inch deep. Today is the last day of my wife’s maternity leave, which is not really about me so much, except that I’m worried about her because it’s going...

Feodor Vassilyev →
Why all the hoopla about the Duggars? From Wikipedia: Feodor Vassilyev (Russian: Фёдор Васильев) (1707–1782) was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. Though not noteworthy himself, his first wife (whose name is unknown) set the record for most children birthed by a single woman. She gave birth to total of 69 children; however, few other details are known of her life, such as her date of birth or...
