Vermont has a work program for prisoners that includes the operation of a print shop in St. Albans. Included among the items produced at the print shop are the decals that adorn the Vermont State Police cruisers.
Four years ago, an unidentified prisoner made an inconspicuous modification to the graphic of the state emblem used on these decals. He rearranged the spots on the cow to form the shape of a pig. Funny when you consider the animal’s use as an epithet for police officers.
The change went unnoticed until this week when a trooper noticed it. The police believe there are about 30 cruisers that have the altered decal.
The Burlington Free Press, which first reported the story yesterday, does not usually report on anything more significant than cows escaping from farms, and is receiving much more attention from this story than usual. It has responded by splashing a big bold copyright statement at the top of today’s follow-up article, which they don’t have on any of their other articles.

Also, the fifth paragraph of today’s article reads thusly:

The story about the pig on the state police emblem was first reported in a copyrighted story on the Burlington Free Press website Thursday afternoon.

Talk about insecure. Hey Burlington Free Press, I’m claiming fair use on this.
