One must be skilled at quickly changing the topic of conversation with my grandmother

This morning I took the kids over my grandmother’s to pick up the gifts she had for them. She’s 91, lives alone, and has her wits about her, but sometimes she’s not aware of what conversation is appropriate around the kids. Like this morning, when she suddenly wants to start talking about the Newtown shooting and how she heard that the guy killed his mother because she was planning on sending him to an institution.
